Readers of mv other, more cautious books upon this and other subjects will see that I have not been unwary in approaching this question; and I do not wish to draw upon myself the charge of credulity merely because I have presented certain theories in this book that, from the standpoint of orthodox science, may appear somewhat wild. Having absolved myself in this manner, I leave the reader to find in the text whatever he can of interest or profit. A certain lack of connection and coherence may be found in the chapters of the book, due to the fact that some of these essays have appeared, in part at least, in the Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research, The Metaphysical Magazine, and elsewhere.
